Overwater Villas

People searching for overwater villas are rarely asking for a normal beach hotel. They want the room to carry the trip: a private deck, a ladder into swimmable water, breakfast on the terrace, and enough privacy that the lagoon feels personal rather than performative.

The costly mistake is treating every overwater category as equal. In reality, orientation, current, reef health, wind exposure, and boat traffic matter as much as square footage. A west-facing sunset villa in the wrong lagoon can be less useful than an entry-level villa with a calm reef ladder and shade after lunch.

Overwater villas are not one idea. In the Maldives, they mean reef ladders, seaplane arrivals, and absolute resort privacy. In Bora Bora, the lagoon comes with Mount Otemanu on the horizon. In the Seychelles and French Polynesia, the best villas are judged by orientation, wind, reef access, and whether the water below the deck is actually swimmable at low tide.
