Not every pretty place deserves a guide

Santorini is breathtaking, but the sunset at Oia is magnificent exactly once before the crowds become overwhelming. The true luxury here is space and silence. It’s waking up in a cliffside cave suite at 7am when the caldera is yours alone, or enjoying a slow lunch in Pyrgos, far above the cruise ship day-trippers.

Where you sleep dictates your entire experience. Imerovigli offers the same dramatic cliff edge as Oia with a fraction of the foot traffic. We prioritize properties that offer genuine seclusion, private plunge pools, and unobstructed, uncrowded views of the Aegean.

Best time to visit

Late May and June: warm enough to swim, long golden evenings, seasonal restaurants freshly opened, and the cruise-ship calendar has not yet peaked. September is the other sweet spot—the sea is warmest, the light turns amber, and the meltemi winds have calmed. Avoid the last two weeks of July and first two of August unless you enjoy sharing the caldera with 10,000 daily visitors.

Planning a Santorini hotel stay

What is the best area to stay in Santorini for a first luxury trip?

Imerovigli. Same caldera drama as Oia, better hotels-per-tourist ratio, and you can walk to Oia in 20 minutes for the sunset without living in the crowds. Fira is for nightlife, not romance.

When should luxury travelers visit Santorini?

Late May or September. June is excellent too but pricier. July–August is sweltering, packed, and every restaurant requires a reservation three days out. October works if you accept some closures.

Should I stay on the caldera or near the beach in Santorini?

Caldera, without question, for a first visit. The beaches are volcanic (black or red sand, hot underfoot) and better experienced as a day trip. The views from the rim are why you came.

Do I need to rent a car in Santorini?

It depends on your base. If you stay in Imerovigli or Oia and plan to relax, rely on private transfers. If you want to explore the wineries in Pyrgos or the beaches in the south, rent a car for just two days rather than your whole trip.
