Maldives

Overwater paradise

By Elena Marchetti/ Senior Travel Editor

Why Maldives, and why now.

Arrive by seaplane and the Maldives reads as a chain of private islands, pale sand, shallow lagoons, and villas set directly over the reef. For luxury travelers the real choice is not whether to go. It is which atoll fits the trip.

North Male offers polished resort access and fast transfers, Baa puts you among protected marine life, the southern atolls trade a longer journey for genuine silence. Choose the atoll before the hotel, because transfer time shapes the whole week.

Top neighbourhoods

Male

A practical arrival point, not the main event. Stay close only for a night before a seaplane transfer, or a brief look at the markets, mosques, and local island life.

North Male Atoll

Best for first trips and short stays, fast transfers, broad resort choice, and the reef-and-spa rhythm starting almost as soon as you land.

South Male Atoll

A quieter alternative with strong diving, sandbanks, and resorts that feel more removed without a long seaplane journey.

Baa Atoll

A UNESCO biosphere reserve, manta season at Hanifaru Bay from June, and ecological resorts with marine biologists on staff. For travelers who came for the water.

Best time to visit Maldives

November to April brings the driest skies, the clearest lagoon colour, and the calmest transfer windows; December to March is peak, with Christmas and New Year the priciest of all. Late April and early November are the value edges of the dry season, still bright but cheaper. May to October works for value-focused stays, with more passing rain, rougher seas, and the manta aggregations in Baa Atoll. The cheapest stretch is the heart of the wet season, June to August.
