The Medina
The walled old city, the souks, the Bahia Palace, and the Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Riads hidden behind anonymous doors, and the full sensory force of the city. The essential, immersive stay.
Marrakech overwhelms on purpose, and the riad is the antidote. Behind a plain door in the medina lies a tiled courtyard, a plunge pool, and a silence the souks a hundred metres away cannot reach. The city's genius is this contrast, sensory chaos outside, deep calm within. Where you stay is the whole experience here.
The old walled medina and the modern Gueliz are two different cities. The medina is the souks, the palaces, and the riads, Gueliz and the Palmeraie hold the resorts, the gardens, and the space. Choose the medina to be inside the storybook, or the outskirts to retreat from it.
The walled old city, the souks, the Bahia Palace, and the Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Riads hidden behind anonymous doors, and the full sensory force of the city. The essential, immersive stay.
The beating square, food stalls, snake charmers, and storytellers by night, ringed by cafes with rooftop views. Central and intense. Stay near, not on it, for some sleep.
The modern new town, wide boulevards, boutiques, galleries, and good restaurants. Calmer and more European, a short taxi from the medina. The comfortable counterweight.
The palm grove on the city's edge, sprawling resorts, gardens, and pools. Removed and tranquil, a drive from the action. Choose it for space and a resort holiday.
March to May and October to November bring warm days and cool evenings, the ideal window. Summer, June to August, is fiercely hot, often over 40 degrees, and best spent by a pool, with rates falling to match. Winter, December to February, is mild by day and cold at night, with clear light and good value. Spring and autumn are peak for weather; for the lowest prices, the high-summer and deep-winter edges are cheapest.
