There is no best month. There is your month.

Japan runs on a calendar of sights. The blossoms, the maples, and the snow each own a window, and the country feels like three different places across them. So start with what you came for.

The cherry blossoms

Sakura opens in the south in late March and reaches Tokyo and Kyoto in early April, then rolls north. Peak beauty, peak crowds, peak price. Book months ahead.

Late March – mid-April
🍂

The autumn maples

Koyo turns the temples of Kyoto and Nikko crimson through November, under some of the clearest skies of the year. Nearly as lovely as spring, a touch calmer.

Late October – November

Snow & better value

January to February bring world-class powder, empty temples, and lower rates outside the New Year week. June trades marquee sights for space and green.

Japan month by month

The view the other guides bury across twelve pages. Two beauty peaks, spring and autumn, bracket a hot, humid summer and a quiet, snow-dusted winter that is the country’s best-kept value.

Three very different Japans

Cherry blossoms in full bloom in Kyoto in spring
Late March – May

Spring, the cherry blossoms

The country everyone pictures: sakura moving north for weeks, then a lush, mild green season. The most beautiful window, and the busiest and priciest, so book far ahead.

October – November

Autumn, the maples

The connoisseur’s season. Clear skies, comfortable air, and koyo foliage that peaks in Kyoto through mid-to-late November. Nearly as gorgeous as spring, a little calmer.

A steaming outdoor onsen bath surrounded by snow in winter
December – February

Winter, snow and onsen

Powder snow in Hokkaido and Nagano, steaming hot springs, city illuminations, and the lowest crowds of the year outside the New Year week. Cold up north, mild in the south.
